My ranking of 226 TFC officially released songs

Postby Nicene Creeder on Mon Mar 05, 2018 6:36 am

The list below is from the 226 unique songs that TFC have had released officially in one form or other (that I am aware of). I include cover songs and songs that were made in collaboration with other singers, but do not include officially release alternative, demo or live versions in the list, even though these versions do weigh in my overall ranking. Teenage Fanclub is a very unique band in that they have so many good songs in their catalogue. Go try to find 100 good songs by The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, or U2 that are even listenable. 75 is a number I keep running up against. I can find 200 songs by The Beatles, but not much more. I can find 300 Bob Dylan songs, but he has over 800 to choose from. TFC is the most underrated and underappreciated rock and roll band ever.

Anyway, here's my list:

Too many great songs.
There are many great songs listed after The Cabbage too.
Where do you rank it?

It's one of my faves, so probably top 5.

I have a hard time ranking things. Some other songs I would rate highly are fairly obvious: Everything Flows, The Concept, Alcoholiday, About You, Sparky's Dream, and I Need Direction. Some lesser-loved, or acknowledged, songs that I would rate highly are Norman 3, Dumb Dumb Dumb, and Born Under A Good Sign. Also, I don't know if it would be towards the top of the list, but I really like Robot Love from The King. I still have no idea who is providing the vocals on that one. Maybe distorted Gerry as the titular robot.

You get points for taking on such a herculean task. I'm surprised others haven't responded. Too controversial? Also, I probably would have left out cover songs, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, well done!

Great work, must have taken you forever..Never realized they had so many songs!
Its easy to pick holes but ultimately the list is your choice...However, i think your lowly placing of "Cells" and "the darkest part of the night" is borderline criminal ha ha

Agreed. Both strong tunes.

"Happiness" is rated quite high but is probably my least favourite song on Howdy! To each their own. I prefer "Only With You" or "The Past" as Ray songs in that vein. I'm also surprised "Can't Feel My Soul" is at #116. That would be top 20 for me. I'd also give more love to "Flowing" and "Ret Liv Dead."

It's nice to see "Into the City" and "Sweet Days Waiting" up there. I'm also partial to Norman's melancholy numbers, so "If I Never See You Again" at #18 is cool. I'd rate "Connected to Life" higher.

Really? It didn't take all that long to rank them (just to make sure I got them all in some official format).

The one song that I would consider dropping on the list is Baby Lee, from 101 maybe down to 141. It doesn't sound like TFC. I don't find it a better song than all of those ranked below it (I'm questioning why I ranked it where I did). It was easily not the single on "Shadows" which should have been released ("When I Still Have Thee" or "Shock and Awe" are far superior).

Baby Lee is my favourite song from Shadows and made me really excited for the album. I was disappointed there wasn't more songs like Baby Lee!

With the autumn/winter gigs in mind, I'm tempted to have a listen through (almost) everything soon to attempt a top 20.

Definites would be I Heard You Looking, Neil Jung, Don't Look Back, Your Love is the Place Where I Come From, The Darkest Part of the Night, Mellow Doubt. Cells would also be much higher on my list, a song I didn't appreciate until I heard the Juliana Hatfield cover.

Interesting. For my ears the song doesn't sound like TFC. As such it's my least favorite song on the album (even though I rated other songs lower). Yanni or Laurel? What do you hear? Laurel.

I would say Gerry's Shadows B-side Secret Heart would be your lowest rated favorite of mine. I think that one's a real gem and should have been on the album (then again, I consider Shadows a "Gerry album" and I don't know which song of his I'd bump off to include Secret Heart.

Some eclectic picks -- I like it. Go with YOUR faves. I have much respect for you putting Fear of Flying in the top 10 and Happiness and Sweet Days Waiting in the top 25. Winter as your SFNB topper. Fascinating. Why do you love it?

Brendan O'Hare should be ecstatic that you have Golden Glades at No. 42, beating out Radio!

Oh, wait, you've got Secret Heart on the list twice! Once at No. 70, then again at No. 203. I was going by the No. 203 ranking.

The 203 song is from their album with Jad Fair, Words of Wisdom and Hope (and no, it's not the same song, just same title). And if you bought the Japanese version of Shadows, Secret Heart (70) is the 13th song on the album.

I've been listening to the 90s b-sides again in anticipation of the forthcoming gigs.

I'm surprised you have Kickabout so high!

What stands out most is you could probably make an album as good as Grand Prix with the Grand Prix era b-sides.

Have you heard the group American Spring (or just Spring) and their song "Everybody"? Kickabout is Everybody.

And yeah, the Grand Prix b-sides combined would have made a second great album in 1995.
